"Learn how to meditate on paper"
Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:34PM
"Learn how to meditate on paper. Drawing and writing are forms of meditation.
Learn how to contemplate works of art.
Learn how to pray in the streets or in the country.
Know how to meditate not only when you have a book in your hand
But when you are waiting for a bus or riding in the train..."

Thomas Merton said at another time, looking down at a book of theology on his desk: "Isn't it wonderful, the number of words it takes for us to explain to God that He exists?"
That reminds me, too, Sonya, of this other line of Merton's: "No writing on the solitary, meditative dimensions of life can say anything that has not already been said better by the wind in the pine trees."
